iOS apps feeling the heat from iOS 6

I recently downloaded the beta version of iOS 6 for iPhone which is the latest operating system announced by apple and will be released in fall 2012. After playing with it, I believe apple has learnt enormously from app developers about consumer behaviour. In this post I will write about apps which will face challenge from the new iOS6.

Apple is quick to adopt popular features in their new iOS however this comes at the cost of creative developers. The entire post is written from my own hands on experience of these apps used in the Middle-East and India.

Maps
Apple unveiled new maps replacing the default Google maps. The new maps will contain over 100 million business listings, navigation, app integration and beautiful 3D images of major cities.
Biggest loser: Google maps. Others include Tomtom, Navigon, Sygic, Mapmy India, Waze & Trapster. Although TomTom and waze feature in apple legal map document, it is believed that apple is working very closely with these companies.

SIRI
SIRI now supports sports, movies and restaurant and brings live information by consumers simply asking their phones.
Biggest loser: IMDB.  Latest SIRI knowledge will hurt numerous apps which brought live sports information, latest restaurant reviews and movie ratings.

New Mail
Mail has become more smart and friendly and now comes VIP inbox, ability to manage labels and attach media within emails
Biggest loser: Sparrow and also Gmail app. With sparrow app still not equipped with push notification, the new iOS Mail will not allow users to slip away.

Facebook Integration
With facebook integration, the iOS will update all facebook contacts in your address book and even add birthdays to calendar.
Biggest loser: MyPhone+. Also facebook camera app and numerous facebook contact management apps.

Passbook
India & the Middle-East has still a long way to go for businesses adopt to mobile loyal customers. However few coupon apps in India will be affected if business hold hands with apple. Worldwide I see a lot of stand-alone loyalty apps going down.

Shared photostream
Biggest loser: Path
I had been using path to share photos amongst my close friends circle, however with photostream allowing the same from within the photo app along with sharing over web and comments, I don’t see a reason to launch path.

FaceTime over cellular
Biggest loser: Tango
Tango’s only advantage remains cross platform, however apps such as skype and viber will surely see a decline in iOS to iOS traffic.

Safari offline reading List
Biggest loser: Pocket (formely Read it Later) and Instapaper

Updated Find my iphone
Biggest losers: A number of lost phone apps
Also with the integration of icloud many reminder and notes based apps which worked over mac and iphone have to compete with apple reminders and notes application in OSX mountain lion.
Biggest loser: All the TO DO apps
